Is your house busting at the seams? Are you finding it hard to keep up with the housework because you’re always cleaning around something or moving around clutter? Are you dreading the holidays because it will mean MORE stuff? Me too!

The past year has been chaos – it started with hyperemesis gravidarum, followed by SPD and partial bed rest, then HELLPS and premature twins, who came home after a 25 day NICU stay. Today they’re 5 months old and things are finally starting to get back to normal. Unfortunately in that time my house has gone to absolute chaos. With just over 3 months until Christmas, now is the time to get everything cleaned up so I can start the new year fresh. I though, well I put myself on a diet to lose the baby weight, why not put my house on a diet to lose the baby clutter?

To kick off the holiday home diet we’re going to start with the 40 bags in 40 days challenge I’ve been seeing all over the place.

40 Bags in 40 Days How To:

  • Print out this list.
  • Start jotting down all the places you need to remove clutter from, sometimes you might want to do multiple bags from each room. Be as specific as you want!
  • Your bags can be any size – a small grocery bag or giant garbage bag. It doesn’t matter as long as you’re getting rid of stuff!
  • A piece of furniture can count as one bag.
  • Filling a bag with garbage counts too.
  • Don’t forget about your fridge, freezer, pantry, basement, and hidden clutter sources. The idea is to clean out every space.
  • Don’t worry about making tough decisions right now, just get rid of the obvious clutter. We’re trying to do a quick kick-start here!
  • Expect to spend about 15 mins a day on this if you’re doing one bag a day. If it’s taking too long consider why: are you trying to multi task, make tough choices, or working slowly?
  • Feel free to work ahead but try not to fall behind – we’re trying to form a daily habit of eliminating clutter to keep it up in the long term.
  • Post your experience in the comments!
